NGX Extends Gains To Third Straight Session As Breadth Improves, Second-Tier Stocks Lead

The Nigerian Exchange extended its winning run to a third consecutive session on Wednesday, with the All-Share Index adding 20 basis points to close at 244,791.79.
Unlike the previous two sessions, Wednesday's gain was broad-based, with advances spread across more names.
MTNN provided the largest lift to the index, rising 0.48% to N815.00, followed by TRANSCORP which gained 4.09% to N34.35 and Nigerian Breweries, which climbed 5.20% to N76.90. The move marks NB's second straight day of gains, taking it back above Friday's close.
NGXGROUP sustained its momentum, adding 4.47% to N187.00 for its fourth consecutive rise, while CHAMPION Breweries surged 9.50% to N10.95.
Banking stocks leaned higher again. UBA rose 1.70% to N44.75, ACCESSCORP was up 1.39% to N29.10, FCMB gained 1.83% to N11.15 and ZENITHBANK edged 0.31% higher to N128.40. GTCO and FIDELITYBK closed a touch higher, while FIRSTHOLDCO and ETI held their previous closes. STANBIC bucked the trend, declining 0.92% to N151.50.
On the losers' chart, OANDO slipped 1.45% to N34.00, WEMABANK shed 1.00% to N29.60, while FIDSON dropped 9.19% to N72.65.
Market activity was mixed. Turnover rose sharply in volume terms, up 27.22%, but was broadly flat in value, edging 0.80% higher, suggesting more trading in lower-priced names.
Offshore investors remained active, with interest seen in ZENITHBANK, MTNN, GTCO, STANBIC, NESTLE and HONEYWELL Flour Mills.
Overall, it was a lively session, but one that did most of its work in the second tier while the heavyweights mostly sat still — a different shape from anything the market has produced this month.
