NGX Ends Q3 On Soft Note As MTNN Drags ASI Lower Despite 61% YTD Gain

The Nigerian Exchange closed the last trading session of the third quarter on a negative note as the All-Share Index, ASI, declined by 28 basis points to 251,211.67 points.
The market recorded its second consecutive decline, dragged largely by heavyweight MTN Nigeria, MTNN, which lost 3.01 per cent to close at N837.00. The telco giant alone accounted for more than the entire day’s fall. Honeywell Flour Mills, HBMNG, also weighed on the market, dropping 1.53 per cent to N355.00.
On the gainers side, BUA Cement rose 3.20 per cent to N297.00, recovering all of Tuesday’s losses, while Unilever gained 4.38 per cent to N104.90 after Tuesday’s slide. However, their combined gains were not enough to offset the loss recorded by MTNN.
The banking sector leaned lower, with Fidelity Bank down 6.07 per cent to N21.65, Access Corporation losing 2.25 per cent to N30.40, and UBA shedding 1.20 per cent to N45.45. GTCO declined by 0.38 per cent to N132.00 and Stanbic by 0.61 per cent to N163.00, while Zenith Bank and ETI closed flat. Wema Bank rose 1.61 per cent to N31.50 and Jaiz Bank added 2.53 per cent to N8.10.
In the wider market, Oando appreciated by 1.45 per cent to N35.00, Honey Flour gained 1.41 per cent to N18.00, while Dangote Sugar eased by 1.45 per cent to N68.00. Learn Africa hit its lower limit, closing at N7.65.
Market turnover was mixed, with volume rising by 60.09 per cent while value fell by 5.78 per cent. VFD Group dominated activity, accounting for over 40 per cent of the day’s volume. Excluding VFD Group, volume was also lower. Offshore participation remained thin, with foreign interest seen in GTCO, Zenith Bank and Nestle.
Despite the soft close, the market ended September 4.11 per cent higher than August, with the ASI up 61.43 per cent year-to-date.
Analysts note that with the Independence Day holiday providing a breather tomorrow, attention will shift to the final quarter and the next round of corporate earnings.
