Keep Your Money In Licensed Banks, NDIC Boss Warns Nigerians Against Ponzi Schemes

The Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, (NDIC), Mr. Thompson Oludare Sunday, has urged Nigerians to keep their money in licensed and regulated financial institutions and shun unlicensed fund managers and Ponzi schemes.
Speaking on the NDIC Special Day at the 21st Abuja International Trade Fair on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Sunday said the theme of the Fair, “Resilience: Trade, Taxation and the Economy,” was timely and aligned with the Federal Government’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
He said for over three decades, the NDIC has remained a critical pillar of Nigeria’s financial safety-net through deposit guarantee, bank supervision in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), failure resolution and bank liquidation.
According to him, to strengthen confidence in the banking system, the Corporation enhanced its deposit insurance coverage in 2024, increasing the maximum insured limit to N5 million per depositor per Deposit Money Bank and Mobile Money Operator, and N2 million per depositor per Microfinance Bank, Primary Mortgage Bank and Payment Service Bank.
“This significant enhancement provides full coverage for over 98 percent of depositors across the insured institutions, thereby protecting households, small businesses and other vulnerable depositors,” he said.
Sunday disclosed that the NDIC is transforming its reimbursement process through technology, including BVN, Single Customer View, SCV, NIBSS infrastructure and other digital solutions, enabling verified depositors of failed banks to receive their insured deposits within days of closure.
He warned that keeping substantial funds outside the formal banking system or with unlicensed fund managers promising unrealistic returns has devastating consequences.
“If an investment promise sounds too good to be true, Nigerians should pause, ask questions and verify before committing their money,” he said.
The NDIC boss also announced the launch of an upgraded website on September 19, 2026, http://www.ndic.gov.ng, describing it as a one-stop digital gateway with features for claims processing, a directory of insured institutions, a Quick Action Bar for filing claims, checking banks, reporting failed banks and FAQs, as well as an AI-powered virtual assistant.
He said the Corporation has repositioned itself from being just a payer of claims after bank failure to a Risk Minimizer that identifies vulnerabilities early and prevents institutional problems from escalating into systemic crises, through initiatives like Risk-Based Supervision, Differential Premium Assessment System, SCV Framework and Bank Liquidation Management System.
