Nigeria’s foreign exchange market recorded a sharp slowdown in activity last week, with total turnover on FMDQ falling to $2.41 billion.

According to the FMDQ Foreign Exchange Market Analysis Report for the week-ended September 4, 2026, total FX Spot and Derivatives turnover dropped 21.38% or $656.67 million from the $3.07 billion reported the previous week.

The decline was broad-based. FX Spot transactions, which make up the bulk of market activity, fell 20.55% to $2.34 billion from $2.95 billion in the week-ended August 28, 2026. The daily average for spot trades also slipped to $468.84 million from $737.64 million.

FX Derivatives, comprising FX Forwards, saw an even steeper drop. Turnover fell 41.59% week-on-week to $70.65 million from $120.96 million. As a result, derivatives’ share of total turnover edged down to 2.93% from 3.94%, while spot trading accounted for 97.07% of all activity.

The overall daily average turnover across both spot and derivatives markets stood at $482.97 million for the week-ended September 4, down from $767.88 million the week before.

Market analysts will be watching whether the dip signals reduced dollar demand, tighter liquidity, or a pause in hedging activity ahead of key economic data later in September.
