Dangote Sugar Returns to Profit in Q2 as Margin Recovery Offsets Weak Sales

By Odume Festus Research Signal

Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc has swung back to profitability in Q2-26, helped by stronger operating leverage and lower borrowing costs despite a continued decline in revenue.

The company released unaudited Q2 results on 30 July, posting earnings per share of N1.84 compared with a loss per share of N0.05 in Q2-25. For H1-26, EPS stood at N3.42 versus a loss per share of N2.00 in H1-25.

Profit after tax rebounded to N22.36 billion in Q2 from a loss of N0.11 billion a year earlier. H1 PAT came in at N41.51 billion, compared with a loss of N23.76 billion in H1-25.

The turnaround was driven by margins, not sales. Revenue fell 5.6% y/y in Q2 and 8.9% y/y in H1, as demand for the core 50kg sugar business remained soft.

The 50kg segment accounts for 97.7% of group revenue and recorded a 4.7% y/y decline in Q2. Retail sugar and Molasses also dropped, by 32.2% y/y and 39.0% y/y respectively.

However, cost of sales fell faster, down 11.8% y/y. That pushed gross margin up 526 basis points to 24.9%. EBITDA margin improved by 905 basis points to 28.6%, while EBIT margin rose 631 basis points to 22.7%. Operating expenses grew a modest 8.0% y/y.

Finance costs also provided a lift. Net finance costs dropped 40.3% y/y to N20.68 billion, supported by a 53.1% decline in letter of credit charges and a 48.9% drop in overdraft interest, as stronger cash generation reduced financing needs.

On a sequential basis there were signs of stabilization. Q2 revenue rose 8.6% q/q, led by a 9.5% q/q increase in 50kg sugar sales.

Analysts note that with the impact of prior price increases fading, future earnings growth will likely depend more on volumes. For now, cost discipline and improved cash flow appear to be supporting margin resilience.

DANGSUGAR’s return to profit marks a clear reversal from the losses recorded through 2025, even as the company navigates weaker domestic sugar demand.
