Founder of DataPro Limited, Mr. Abimbola Adeseyoju, says sovereign credit rating has evolved from a strategic ambition to an urgent necessity for African economies seeking to build shock-resilient economies.

Adeseyoju stated this in his opening remarks at the 6th DataPro International Credit Rating Webinar held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, themed "Credit Rating as a Catalyst for Economic Transformation."

Welcoming participants joining live across the globe, including the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, members of the diplomatic corps, capital market operators and development finance institutions, he said Africa is at a pivotal era of profound structural shifts.

"In today's global economic landscape, credit rating is no longer a passive measure of risk; it is now a catalyst for economic transformation," Adeseyoju said.

According to him, sovereign credit ratings serve as a primary gateway to international capital markets, dictating flow of investment, cost of funds, and how effectively markets can fund infrastructure, industrialisation and sustainable growth.

He noted that the imperative to attract long-term patient capital, reduce borrowing costs and build resilient economies has become urgent.

Adeseyoju outlined three factors that drive investor confidence and must be addressed to achieve and sustain investment-grade status across African nations.

These include structural reforms and fiscal sustainability through policy choices that embrace fiscal discipline and strengthen institutional frameworks; capital market depth and transparency by strengthening local capital markets, improving data accessibility and enhancing risk transparency; and domesticating the African narrative in global ratings by fostering objective, context-aware rating methodologies that balance risk awareness with growth potential inherent in emerging African economies.

Looking ahead, he said Africa's journey towards investment-grade status is achievable through deliberate policy execution, sound market infrastructure and robust cross-border collaboration.

"At DataPro our commitment remains unwavering: to provide transparent, actionable and credible market intelligence that bridges the gap between capital seekers and investors," he added.

He thanked the keynote speaker and regulatory leaders and urged participants across YouTube, LinkedIn and virtual platforms to engage actively for an insightful and impact-driven webinar.
