BUACEMENT, GTCO Drag NGX ASI Down 0.29% Despite TRANSCOHOT 9.42% Rally

The Nigerian Exchange All-Share Index fell 29 basis points to 251,913.20 on Tuesday, weighed down by heavy losses in BUACEMENT and GTCO.
BUACEMENT was the major drag, losing 3.10 per cent to N287.80 and accounting for the bulk of the market decline. GTCO was the other weight, declining 3.28 per cent to N132.50 following its half-year earnings release, which failed to impress market participants.
The losses were partly offset by TRANSCOHOT, which pulled strongly in the opposite direction, jumping 9.42 per cent to N290.50 and covering a good portion of what the two laggards took away.
In the banking space, most lenders gave back some of Monday’s gains. ZENITHBANK eased 1.03 per cent to N134.00, ETI fell 2.86 per cent to N68.00 and ACCESSCORP dropped 2.51 per cent to N31.10, while UBA, FIRSTHOLDCO and STANBIC closed flat. WEMABANK rose 2.99 per cent to N31.00 and FIDELITYBK edged up to N23.05.
On the consumer goods board, UNILEVER fell 8.55 per cent to N100.50 in its first significant move this month, INTBREW lost 5.45 per cent to N9.55 and DANGSUGAR declined 1.43 per cent to N69.00. NGXGROUP also eased 1.36 per cent to N181.00.
On the gainers’ side, HONYFLOUR added 3.80 per cent to N17.75, CWG appreciated 6.96 per cent to N20.75, ETERNA rose 2.92 per cent to N44.00 and CHAMPION gained 2.59 per cent to N9.90.
Market turnover improved, with volume up 2.80 per cent and value 15.30 per cent higher, but GTCO alone accounted for a third of the day’s value. Without it, both measures would have been lower than Monday’s levels.
Offshore interest was heaviest in the two large banks that fell, with GTCO attracting four foreign houses and ZENITHBANK two.
“Two names decided the day and pulled in opposite directions, and the one that fell was the heavier,” the market wrap noted.
