BUA Cement and Nestle dragged the Nigerian Exchange to its second consecutive loss on Wednesday, wiping out most of the gains made last week.

The All Share Index fell 105 basis points to close at 242,223.10. BUA Cement led the decline after closing limit down at N278.10, and on its own accounted for the bulk of the day’s drop. Nestle was the other heavyweight dragging the market, falling 6.51% to N2,800.00. Between the two stocks, the losses more than covered the entire index decline.

The selloff was less broad than Tuesday’s but still cut across sectors. NB dropped 9.76% to N74.00, falling below its pre-Friday level. Transcorp fell 5.57% to N33.05, Oando was down 6.29% to N32.80, Cadbury lost 9.94% to N58.45, and NEM shed a further 6.30% to N29.00.

Banks were mixed. Zenith Bank recovered late to close 1.64% higher at N124.00 after trading as low as sub-N119, while UBA edged up 0.47% to N42.95 and SterlingNG gained 2.67% to N7.70. On the other side, AccessCorp fell 4.16% to N26.50, FCMB declined 4.87% to N10.75, GTCO slipped 1.31% to N128.00, and FidelityBK dropped 1.81% to N19.00. FirstHoldCo held flat at N136.00.

There were a few gainers. Champion hit the 10% ceiling, up 9.90% to N11.10, recovering losses from the prior two sessions, and VFDGroup rose 9.52% to N11.50.

Market activity cooled. Volume fell 29.05% and value dropped 20.20%. Offshore participation was thin, with activity seen only in HBMNG and GTCO. Major crosses included 1.6m units of GTCO at N128.00, 1m units of Nestle at N2,800.00, and 29.9m units of SterlingNG at N7.50.

After two days of selling, the index has now given back most of what took a week to build. The question for traders now is whether this is just a profit-taking reset, or the start of a deeper pullback.
