The Nigerian Exchange extended its winning streak to seven sessions on Tuesday as banking heavyweights powered the All-Share Index 18bps higher to 250,614.66.

It was a bank-led rally. Not one large bank closed lower. STANBIC led the charge, jumping 7.09% to N163.85, while ZENITHBANK rose 2.64% to N132.00, GTCO 2.54% to N137.30, UBA 4.07% to N46.00 and FIDELITYBK 3.88% to N20.10. Together, the five accounted for a fifth of the day's total volume. FIRSTHOLDCO added 1.75% to N162.80 and ACCESSCORP inched up 0.67% to N30.15.

The banks have now done in two days what the rest of the board took a week to do.

DANGCEM provided the other major lift, gaining 1.71% to N1,068.00, while HBMNG added 1.83% to N361.50.

On the downside, MTNN was the market's sole major drag. The telecom giant fell 4.49% to N850.00, giving back roughly half of Friday's jump, and on its own came close to offsetting all the gains made by the banks.

Elsewhere, losses were concentrated in small caps. CHAMPION lost 8.68% to N10.00, MBENEFIT shed 8.38% to N3.50 and MANSARD dropped 6.67% to N11.20, while UACN eased 0.89% to N172.00.

On the gainers' side, CADBURY rose 8.29% to N60.10, NB added 0.58% to N77.90 and OANDO was up 0.98% to N36.00.

Activity picked up sharply. Turnover rose on both measures, with volume up 45.83% and value up 27.60%. ZENITHBANK dominated value, accounting for more than a quarter of the day's total, while FIDELITYBK accounted for a fifth of volume, both driven by large crosses.

Offshore participation intensified, concentrated in ZENITHBANK, GTCO, MTNN and NESTLE.

104.7m units of FIDELITYBK crossed at N20.00, 36.8m units of ZENITHBANK at N128.6, 25.8m units of ACCESSCORP at N29.70, 19.6m units of GTCO at N134.0 and 16m units of ZENITHBANK at N132.0 among other crosses in ARADEL, DANGCEM, MTNN, NESTLE, NGXGROUP and UBA.
