ASI Slips 7bps To 250,096.75 As TRANSCORP Drags, Banks Lean Lower

The All-Share Index slipped 7 basis points to 250,096.75, with TRANSCORP emerging as the heaviest drag after giving back most of Tuesday’s gain with a 2.67 per cent fall to N36.50.
STANBIC did the most to cushion the loss, recovering almost all of Tuesday’s fall with a 1.11 per cent rise to N163.90. MTNN edged up 0.12 per cent to N848.00 and ZENITHBANK 0.22 per cent to N135.80, but most other banks leaned lower.
GTCO lost 0.75 per cent to N131.50, UBA 1.22 per cent to N44.50, ETI 1.47 per cent to N67.00, with WEMABANK the sharpest of the lot, down 3.02 per cent to N30.55.
Outside banks, DANGSUGAR gave back most of Monday’s gain with a 2.14 per cent fall to N68.50, while OANDO extended its slide, losing 3.23 per cent to N33.00. CHAMPION went the other way, jumping 9.50 per cent to N10.95, while UNILEVER climbed back to N100.00, up 0.70 per cent.
Insurance swung both ways. SOVRENINS handed back all of Tuesday’s gain in a 7.60 per cent fall to N2.31, while WAPIC rose for a second day, up 9.24 per cent to N2.60, and GUINEAINS added 6.85 per cent to N0.78 on the day its placement shares were listed. Further down the board, CMFC went from the floor to the ceiling, up 9.86 per cent to N4.01, while MULTITREX rose 8.33 per cent to N0.39 in its first session back after nearly eight years of suspension.
Turnover fell on both measures, with volume down 22.84 per cent and value down 36.44 per cent. ZENITHBANK took the largest share of both, a good part through crosses, and also drew the biggest foreign line of the day by a distance, with GTCO next and HBMNG, DANGCEM, DANGSUGAR and UNILEVER taking smaller lines from offshore desks.
After a relatively quiet session, there was no single name loud enough to steal the show, and the index still found a way to close lower.
