Africa Pushes Back on Sovereign Ratings: New Panel to Drive Case for AfCRA at 2026 International Rating Webinar

Global experts will gather this year for the 2026 International Rating Webinar to tackle one of Africa’s most pressing financial issues: how sovereign credit ratings shape the continent’s access to capital.
This year’s theme, “Sovereign Credit Rating: Africa's R. ” set to unpack the rating gap facing African economies — will put the spotlight on fairness, methodology, and Africa’s own response to global assessments.
Headlining the panel is *Dr. Misheck Mutize*, Lead Expert on Credit Rating Agencies at the African Peer Review Mechanism, APRM. Dr. Mutize is currently spearheading the establishment of the
Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA), an African Union-backed initiative aimed at giving the continent a stronger voice in global capital markets and addressing concerns over debt sustainability and sovereign risk.
He will be joined by three leading international voices:
- Dr. Daniel Cash*, Founder of the Credit Rating Research Initiative and Associate Professor at Aston University, author of nine books on the credit rating industry
- Prof. Dr. Torsten Schmidt*, Head of Macroeconomics & Public Finance at RWI Essen, an expert in business cycles and public finance
- Prof. Kai Gehring*, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Bern, with research on the IMF, World Bank, and effectiveness of development finance
The panel is expected to debate how current rating models impact African borrowing costs, the role of political and economic factors in assessments, and whether a homegrown agency like AfCRA can rebalance the system.
With debt pressures mounting across the continent, organizers say the webinar comes at a “critical and timely” moment for policymakers, investors, and development partners looking to understand Africa’s position in the global financial architecture.
