Some electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) may have failed to meet the February 28 dateline set by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for the provision of pre-paid meters to customers nationwide. NERC issued the notice to the DisCos, giving them till February 28, 2017 to deploy meters to all their Large Power Users (LPU).
Defaulters, it said would come under its sanctions from March 1st. The commission, in June 2016 after consultation with the operators, directed the DisCos to conclude metering of all such users called Maximum Demand (MD) customers by November 30, 2016.
Although the dateline set by NERC has ended, the commission is yet to make a statement to announce the commencement of sanctions for the defaulters. Our reporter has observed that some of the DisCos did not fully comply with the directive as at the end of February 2017 after the 3-month moratorium it granted them ended.
